Although I’m currently writing this while listening to Christmas music, autumn’s in full swing and there’s not a more beautiful time to visit Jackson Hole, Wyoming. As the world transitions from the energetic hues of summer to the warm amber of fall, we instinctively gravitate towards comfort. I can’t think of a cozier way to end a great day in Jackson than curling up with a great book and a mug of something hot and rich. So if you’re planning a trip to Jackson, don’t worry about packing reading material ahead of time. There’s no need to sit in your hotel room longing for literature, because you'll find two excellent Jackson Hole bookstores where you can find your next great read.
Jackson Hole Book Trader
What’s its story?Jackson Hole Book Trader first opened its doors in 1998, its hand-hewn shelves stocked with secondhand and collectible books. In 2017, a Jackson local and longtime store employee purchased the store, making updates and expanding the store’s collection in order to transform the place into a Jackson Hole mainstay. Where is it?Powderhorn Mall, West BroadwayWhat kind of books does it sell?In addition to their generous display of coffee table books, Jackson Hole Book Traders’ selection of collectible editions is also impressive. And be sure to check out their generous array of coffee table books—my husband found his eye drawn by a comprehensive volume of Marvel superheroes. Along with their artfully arranged shelves of new books, you can buy and sell your used books. What’s the general vibe?Think big city flair with authentic western charm, both glamorous and comfortable. The matte black fireplace crowned with antlers immediately draws the eye. What’s the best part of the space?Next to the fireplace are a pair of comfortable armchairs, the sort of thing that, accompanied by a mug of a favorite hot beverage, figures in every bibliophile’s dreams. You might not be able to enjoy the chairs at the moment (see note below), but that’s just one more thing to look forward to in the future. What do I need to know when planning my Jackson trip?As of this week (November 16), Jackson Hole Book Trader is temporarily offering curbside pickup only and will not be buying used books. Be sure to check their website while you’re in town to see what options are available for you. Valley Bookstore
What’s its story? Founded 45 years ago and owned by longtime locals, the Valley Bookstore has been recommending the next great read to locals and tourists alike. Where is it?A longtime fixture of Gaslight Alley, the Valley Bookstore is moving to Broadway in December. What kind of books does it sell?Valley Bookstore features a wide selection of fiction and nonfiction, area guidebooks, as well as a nice collection of books by local authors. Surely there’s something to interest even the most discriminating reader. What’s the general vibe?Walking into Valley Bookstore feels like you’re stepping into the home library of a well-read friend. What’s the best part of the space? My personal favorite feature of this bookstore is the children’s section. Along with the selection of children’s books, they have a treehouse with a reading nook. The perfect place for any child (or adult) to curl up and explore their new book. I also appreciate the Staff Picks shelves, which can also be found on their website. What do I need to know when planning my Jackson trip?Valley Bookstore is currently scheduled to re-open in its new location in December.
